Yahoo utilizes a single filtering platform that governs several consumer mailbox brands. The deliverability rules and guidelines apply uniformly across:

• Yahoo: yahoo.com, ymail.com, rocketmail.com, and regional variants (e.g., yahoo.co.uk, yahoo.fr).
• AOL: aol.com and related domains, including Verizon consumer mailboxes (verizon.net) hosted on the AOL platform.
• AT&T: att.net, sbcglobal.net, bellsouth.net, pacbell.net, prodigy.net, swbell.net, ameritech.net, snet.net, flash.net, currently.com, worldnet.att.net, wans.net, nvbell.net.

When sizing your Yahoo traffic for throttling or reporting, group all of these domains together to accurately reflect the true volume Yahoo processes from your IPs.

Core Sender Requirements

Yahoo enforces strict guidelines for bulk senders. Failure to comply will result in deferrals, spam-foldering, or permanent rejections.

Authentication	SPF and DKIM must both pass. Unauthenticated mail is rejected (550 5.7.9).
DMARC	A valid DMARC record is required (minimum p=none), and it must pass. Relaxed alignment between the From domain and the SPF/DKIM domain is accepted.
Spam Complaint Rate	Must remain below 0.3%. (Aim to stay below 0.1% to avoid early throttling). Yahoo calculates this solely against messages delivered to the inbox.
DNS Setup	Valid forward (A) and reverse (PTR) DNS records are required for all sending IPs. PTR records should be meaningful, not generic.
One-Click Unsubscribe	Required for marketing and subscribed mail. Must include a working List-Unsubscribe header supporting one-click (RFC 8058 POST is highly recommended) and a visible link in the body. Unsubscribes must be honored within 2 days.
From Addresses	Do not send bulk mail with a @yahoo.com or @aol.com From address through an ESP. They publish DMARC p=reject, meaning the mail will fail DMARC and bounce.

Deliverability Best Practices & Sender Hub

To maintain high inbox placement, separate your mail streams. Use a dedicated subdomain for marketing (e.g., news.yourbrand.com) and a distinct one for transactional mail. Start sending small volumes on new IPs or domains, increasing daily volume gradually only as long as Yahoo accepts the mail without TSS04 deferrals.

Yahoo Sender Hub Setup:

All senders should actively monitor their reputation using Yahoo Sender Hub.

1. Verify each DKIM signing domain via DNS TXT record.
2. Enroll your verified domain in the Complaint Feedback Loop (CFL) to receive individual ARF reports for automatic suppression.
3. Activate the Insights dashboard to track your aggregate delivered messages and true spam complaint rates.

If you send through a shared ESP that signs with its own DKIM domain, complaints are attributed to the ESP, and you will not receive CFL reports or Insights data. Always sign with your own domain using 2048-bit DKIM keys.

Troubleshooting Common Yahoo Bounce Codes

Yahoo dynamically throttles and blocks mail based on reputation and volume spikes. When encountering 5xx errors, list managers must have a policy for removing the bouncing addresses, as Yahoo strictly prohibits retrying permanent failures.
